Our summer camp adventures took a major step back in time last month! The campers at Sweet Potato Kids went for a special deep dinosaur dive into the prehistoric world doing paleontology, and earth science during our trip to the Maryland Science Center in Baltimore’s Inner Harbor,
From stepping into the shoes of real field scientists to unearthing fossils in a hands-on dinosaur dig, our young explorers proved that big discoveries start with curious minds!
🦖 Hands-On Paleontology: Touching History
Walking into the famed Dinosaur Mysteries exhibit felt like entering a prehistoric world filled with full-scale dinosaur skeletons towering above us. But our campers didn't just look—they investigated!
Our students had the incredible opportunity to interact with real dinosaur bones and fossil casts. Learning how paleontologists uncover and preserve ancient remains gave our campers a firsthand understanding of how scientists piece together clues about life on Earth millions of years ago.
⛏️ The Great Dinosaur Dig
No paleontologist’s journey is complete without field work! Our campers grabbed their tools and headed over to the interactive fossil dig pit.
Tactile Discovery: Brushing away sand and uncovering buried fossils gave our campers a thrilling, tactile lesson in excavation techniques.
Problem-Solving & Patience: The children carefully uncovered specimens, working together to identify teeth, claws, and bone structures just like professional field researchers.
🪨 Rocks, Minerals, & Earth Geology
Beyond prehistoric reptiles, our campers dived into geology and earth science. The children explored different rock types, examined mineral formations, and learned how the Earth’s layers change over time to preserve fossils. Touching different rock textures and analyzing geological clues sparked endless questions and deep scientific curiosity!
Nurturing Young Scientists in Baltimore County
At Sweet Potato Kids, field trips are designed to spark wonder and build real-world connections to our classroom curriculum. Watching our students demonstrate respect for museum exhibits, listen attentively to staff, and collaborate during hands-on activities reminded us why play-based science education is so powerful.
