Summer camp at Sweet Potato Kids is full of high-energy excitement, from science experiments and field trips to outdoor water fun. But among all the laughter and movement, we also know how essential it is to slow down, breathe, and give our students time to regulate.
This week, our campers took off their shoes, stepped onto the soft cool grass, and participated in a special outdoor grounding session centered around the practice of Earthing!

What is "Earthing" & Why Do Kids Need It?
Earthing (also known as grounding) is the simple practice of making direct skin contact with the surface of the Earth—whether by walking barefoot in the grass, pressing palms into the soil, or sitting quietly under a tree.
In today’s fast-paced world, children absorb a constant stream of sensory input. During an active summer day, young nervous systems can easily become overstimulated. Earthing acts as a natural "reset button" for the body:

Regulates the Nervous System: Direct contact with nature helps lower stress signals in the body, promoting a state of calm and balance.
Settles Nerves into the Body: Taking off shoes and feeling the physical texture of the earth helps children ground their energy, bringing awareness back into their bodies.
Encourages Mindfulness: Feeling the gentle breeze, the damp grass, and the warmth of the sun fosters present-moment awareness and self-soothing skills.
Connecting with Nature through Play-Based Wellness
Watching our campers experience grounding was truly magical! As shoes and socks came off, giggles quickly turned into peaceful focus. The children wiggled their toes in the grass, squatted low to feel closer to the Earth, and felt the calming rhythm of nature all around them.
At Sweet Potato Kids, our educational framework prioritizes Safe & Supportive Spaces—maintaining environments where children can nurture not just their minds, but their physical and emotional well-being. Giving students intentional moments to reconnect with nature helps them develop the social-emotional resilience they need to navigate big feelings, focus in the classroom, and build healthy lifelong coping habits.

The Power of the Mid-Summer Reset
After our grounding session, our campers walked back inside refreshed, focused, and ready for their next adventure! They were more calm, listened to their teachers more, and they respected one another better. Incorporating mindful wellness practices like Earthing into our summer camp schedule ensures that our students enjoy the perfect balance of high-energy fun and restful emotional harmony.
Here’s to more sunny days, bare feet, and happy, balanced campers at Sweet Potato Kids in Baltimore County!
