Hands-On STEM & High-Flying Fun: Sweet Potato Kids at the Maryland Science Center!

When it comes to summer camp at Sweet Potato Kids, learning doesn't stop at the the treehouse! This week, our curious young explorers loaded up for an unforgettable field trip to the Maryland Science Center in Baltimore's Inner Harbor. From stepping directly into a roaring weather phenomenon to testing the laws of physics with levitating balls, our campers dove headfirst into a full day of tactile, high-energy STEM (and STEAM!) discoveries. Here is a look inside our high-powered day of science, smiles, and summer camp adventure!

Field Trip Highlights: Science Come to Life

Weathering the Storm in the Hurricane Simulator

One of the biggest thrills of the day was the Hurricane Simulator! Our campers stepped inside to feel the incredible force of high-velocity wind speeds safely firsthand. Watching their eyes light up as wind whipped past gave our students a wild, real-world lesson in meteorology, air pressure, and natural science.

Defying Gravity: The Floating Ball Exhibit

Over at the air pressure exhibits, physics felt almost like magic! Our campers experimented with streams of air pressure to make balls float suspended in mid-air. By adjusting angles and air flow, our little scientists learned how invisible forces interact with object mass—building early foundational knowledge in aerodynamics and physics through play.

Balance & Coordination: The Lunch Tray Challenge

Who knew learning about physics could be so practical? One of the favorite interactive stations was the Lunch Tray Balance Challenge. Campers were tasked with carefully maneuvering and balancing weighted objects on a tray to navigate center-of-gravity puzzles. It was a fantastic activity that challenged their problem-solving skills, spatial reasoning, and fine motor coordination—skills they'll carry straight into the lunchroom and classroom!

STEAM in Action: Creative Arts & Crafts

Science isn't just about formulas and forces—it’s about creativity! Our campers visited the interactive craft spaces to express what they learned through hands-on art projects. Blending fine-art creativity with scientific thinking gave our students a well-rounded STEAM experience that nurtured both sides of their developing brains.

Proud Moments: Celebrating Our SPK Campers!

Field trips are about more than just fun exhibits; they are a stage for our students to demonstrate our core values. Throughout the entire venue, our Sweet Potato Kids campers showed phenomenal behavior. They listened attentively to staff instructions, stayed with their groups, shared exhibits kindly with other guests, and represented the Sweet Potato Kids with pride. We could not be prouder of our respectful, compassionate young leaders!

Building Lifelong Curiosity in Baltimore County

A huge thank you to our phenomenal educators, staff, and parent chaperones who kept our day safe, seamless, and joyful—and to the staff at the Maryland Science Center for welcoming us! At Sweet Potato Kids, experiences like this fuel natural curiosity, spark a love for science, and create summer camp memories that last a lifetime.

Where will our summer camp journey take us next? Stay tuned to our blog and social channels to find out!
